TCHS Band Teacher One Of The Winners In Hometown Heroes Contest

Each year, Beaver Toyota of St. Augustine accepts nominations of local community members to be recognized as Hometown Heroes. Among the nominees are police officers, fire fighters, first responders, teachers, and volunteers.

A former Arts student nominated band teacher and marching band director, our very own Mr. Cananzi.

Anthony Cananzi is the band teacher and director of the Marching Toros at Tocoi Creek Highschool, member of the Vic Firth Education Team, and a Mapex Performing Artist . During his time at Nease Highschool he built an award winning band and marching band, performing at state competitions and earning superior ratings. He then took his talents to help build a brand new highschool. Not only did he create yet another award winning band, but he also built a tradition of excellence at Tocoi that is recognized throughout the county. But, he wasn't just a great band director, he is also a father, a mentor, and a trusted adult that would do anything for his students. Anyone felt comfortable enough to come up to him with their problems no matter how trivial, and his door was always open to listen no matter how busy he is. His care is shown through his work and the endless respect and love his students have for him. I've seen him spend so much time before and after school to make sure he's doing what's best for the band, and so the band is performing at their best, and yet it seems like he doesn't get the credit for the effort he puts for the band and school. He puts up with so much stress, just so his students can walk away feeling proud of what they've done. He makes every student feel seen and important, and will always talk to you on an equal level, because he sees his students as more than just kids. He doesn't know just how much he's impacted his students, including myself, which is why I wanted to nominate him, so he knows how important he is to everyone, not only at Tocoi, but in all of St. Johns County.

Community members participated in a voting period, and Mr. Cananzi made it to the top three of nominees. From there, nominees submitted personal videos, sharing more about their contributions to the community.

On Friday, Beaver Toyota announced the final winners. Horns Up for Mr. Cananzi, taking first place, and winning a new car!

Congratulations, Mr. Cananzi!
